The Approach Pack offers significantly more volume — up to 10.7 liters in the L/XL size — with zippered compartments on each side that can be removed entirely when you just want a harness. The Big Baxter's saddlebags are smaller at roughly 0.8 liters per side, better suited for carrying water, treats, and waste bags rather than multi-day supplies. Internal compression straps on the Approach help stabilize loads.
Edge: Ruffwear Approach Pack — substantially more capacity and better load management.
The Approach comes in three sizes with five adjustment points, letting you fine-tune the harness to your dog's build. The Big Baxter is a one-size design with adjustable straps, which works for many dogs but can be tricky for very small or very large breeds. The Approach's sized construction generally means less excess webbing and a cleaner fit.
Edge: Ruffwear Approach Pack — sized options provide a more precise, secure fit.
Ruffwear engineered cross-ventilation foam channels into the Approach's chest panel, which help dissipate heat during strenuous hikes. The Big Baxter uses a mesh belly panel that provides decent airflow but doesn't address heat buildup on the chest and back as effectively. For hot-weather hiking, the Approach's design gives it a meaningful advantage.
Edge: Ruffwear Approach Pack — purpose-built ventilation system for active dogs.
The Approach Pack places saddlebags higher on the dog's center of gravity and uses compression straps to prevent load sway. The Big Baxter's bags sit slightly lower and can swing on steep terrain if not packed carefully. Both distribute weight evenly left-to-right, but the Approach gives you better control over load stability.
Edge: Ruffwear Approach Pack — better load stability, especially on technical terrain.
The Approach uses 420D nylon with bar-tack reinforcement — it's built for years of trail abuse. The Big Baxter uses lighter materials that hold up well for casual hiking but may show wear sooner on rough terrain. The tradeoff is price: the Baxter costs about half as much as the Approach, making it a solid entry point for dogs new to packing.
Edge: Kurgo Big Baxter — for value; Ruffwear for long-term durability.
You do serious trail miles, need real carrying capacity, or hike in warm weather. The ventilation, capacity, and load management justify the premium price.
You want an affordable pack for day hikes where your dog carries light loads — water, treats, and poop bags. Great starter pack at half the price.
Our lean: The Ruffwear Approach Pack wins on every performance metric. But if you're just getting started with dog packing and want to see if your dog takes to it, the Big Baxter is an honest, affordable way to find out.
