02 · Detailed Comparison

Sole Grip

The Grip Trex uses a genuine Vibram® outsole with 3.5mm lugs — the same rubber compound used in premium hiking boots. It delivers excellent traction on wet rock, loose gravel, and scree. The QUMY boots have a textured rubber sole that provides adequate grip on pavement and light trails but lacks the aggressive tread pattern needed for technical terrain. On slick surfaces, the difference is dramatic.

Edge: Ruffwear Grip Trex — Vibram® sole is in a different league for trail traction.

Staying Power

Both boots use hook-and-loop closures, but the Grip Trex adds a protective gaiter that wraps higher around the ankle, reducing the chance of boots flinging off during running or scrambling. The QUMY boots use a dual-closure system — Velcro strap plus an adjustable drawstring — that holds reasonably well on pavement but can slip during vigorous off-trail activity. Community feedback consistently rates the Grip Trex as more secure on moving dogs.

Edge: Ruffwear Grip Trex — gaiter + strap system stays on better during active use.

Terrain Suitability

The Grip Trex is purpose-built for trail hiking — rocky terrain, stream crossings, and mountain scrambles. Its breathable mesh upper drains water quickly but doesn't fully seal out moisture. The QUMY boots excel on urban surfaces — hot pavement, salted winter sidewalks, rain — with a water-resistant upper that keeps paws drier. They're less effective on uneven natural terrain where flexible sole feel matters.

Edge: Depends on use — Grip Trex for trails, QUMY for urban/weather protection.

Sizing

Ruffwear sizes by paw width and offers a printable sizing template — it's precise but requires you to measure carefully. Boots are sold in pairs, so you buy two sets for all four paws (front and back paw widths often differ). QUMY uses numbered sizes based on paw length and comes as a set of four, which is more convenient. However, length-based sizing can be less precise for wide-pawed or narrow-pawed breeds.

Edge: QUMY — for convenience (all 4 included); Grip Trex for sizing precision.

Price

A full set of four Grip Trex boots costs $80–90 (two pairs). A full set of four QUMY boots costs $20–25. That's a 3–4x price difference. The Grip Trex justifies its premium with Vibram® rubber, superior construction, and better trail performance, but for occasional pavement protection, the QUMY boots deliver solid value.

Edge: QUMY — significantly more affordable for basic paw protection needs.

03 · The Verdict

Choose the Grip Trex if…

You hike rocky, technical, or wet trails regularly. The Vibram® sole and secure gaiter system are worth the premium for active trail dogs.

Choose the QUMY Boots if…

You need affordable paw protection for hot pavement, winter salt, rain, or light trails. Great starter boots at a quarter of the price.

Our lean: For serious trail use, the Ruffwear Grip Trex is clearly the better boot — nothing else matches its Vibram® sole on rough terrain. But the QUMY boots are a perfectly reasonable choice for urban paw protection and a smart way to test whether your dog tolerates boots before investing in premium gear.
